World wide media coverage and visitors from throughout the globe have ushered in the opening of the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum at Patriots Point. This national museum is also home to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, the most unique and perhaps the most exclusive organization in the United States. Its members share the distinct honor of wearing our nation’s highest award for military valor.
Now Open! The Congressional Medal of Honor Museum
Located on board the historic aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum features interactive exhibits that explain the origin of the Medal of Honor and what it stands for. Perhaps of greater importance, these exhibits tell the stories of brave Americans who displayed remarkable courage such as Audie Murphy, Sergeant Alvin York and Jimmy Doolittle. Even now, the Medal of Honor continues to touch the lives of Americans as the museum pays special tribute to the first Medal of Honor recipients from the War On Terror; exceptional Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Congressional Medal of Honor Museum at Patriots Point has become the premier visitor attraction in the Greater Charleston area. Come experience the embodiment of honor, courage and sacrifice.
The Congressional Medal of Honor Museum is included in the Patriots Point admission.
Grand Opening of the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum
May 23 - 25, 2007
A national television audience, international media coverage and an unprecedented gathering of Medal of Honor recipients highlighted the official opening of the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum at Patriots Point.
Dignitaries, American heroes as well as sports and entertainment personalities were among those attending the Flight Deck Gala on board USS Yorktown the evening of May 23, 2007. Following the live broadcast of NBC Nightly News from Patriots Point, NBC News Anchor and Managing Editor Brian Williams served as Master of Ceremonies for the gala. But the true guests of honor, and quite frankly the “rock stars” of the evening were the forty one Medal of Honor recipients who attended the gala.
A second grand opening event was held on Friday, May 25th in advance of the Memorial Day weekend. Hundreds of visitors from throughout the southeastern United States were greeted by Medal of Honor recipient Maj. Gen. James Livingston (USMC, Ret.) and became some of the first people to tour the new exhibits. The evening concluded with guests enjoying a fireworks display from the flight deck of USS Yorktown.
Beginning with large Memorial Day weekend crowds, the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum has had significant impact on overall visitation numbers at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum and Charleston area tourism.
