Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum Prepares for Hurricane Matthew
Chris Hauff Oct 04, 2016Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, following the direction of the Charleston County Government, will close to visitors starting Wednesday, October 5 and remain closed until further notice. The museum will spend the next few days preparing its warships and aircraft for the effects of Hurricane Matthew.
“Our first commitment is to the safety of our staff and their families,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette. “Before the storm arrives, we will focus on securing all aircraft and ships to the best of our ability. We have a very comprehensive heavy weather plan that we will follow, and if necessary, we will keep an emergency crew onboard the USS Yorktown. “
Patriots Point plans to reopen to visitors as soon as possible once the storm has passed. The state agency follows the weather decisions made by Charleston County government officials.
“We will be ready to reopen as soon as we get the ‘all clear,’” said Burdette.

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum Unharmed By Hurricane Matthew has Reopened
We were just there last week on Thursday, visiting the ships and taking the tour to Fort Sumter. What a lovely day it was, and I hope Matthew is not as bad as predicted. Hope everyone stays safe!
I hope hurricane Matthew come and goes and doesn’t hurt any of patriots points ships or aircraft. Our boy scout troop is planning on coming to camp overnight on October 21-23.
Thanks for all you do! My Dad was aboard Yorktown during the Korean conflict! Was proud to visit and I will be back!
We will be leaving oct. 14 or15 to bring our kids to your ship. WILL YOU BE OPEN? Please reply asap. Do we need to change our much needed vacation plans. We were hoping to tour all three areas. Thanks for your response.
We will be open and hope you will visit our museum! Hurricane Matthew did not affect us at all.

Hopefully everything survived okay. Please post an update when you can.
UPDATE: The Fighting Lady has won another battle! This time against Hurricane Matthew. All is well aboard the ship. Aside from a small plumbing problem and a few downed trees around the museum, there has not been any damage.
We plan to reopen to the public on Tuesday. Every ship and exhibit will be open!

Fantastic!! Looking forward to visiting in December
Great that all survived Matthew!
We are driving over from HH and visiting both the Point and Ft Sumter on Nov 1.
Is it possible to enter the Point, leave for Sumter later, then re-enter Patriots Pt for a second visit same day?
Absolutely. Once you have purchased your ticket, your entry or re-entry is allowed all day long. This also applies to parking. If you visit the Fort Sumter Tours website, you can purchase a ticket that is good for both attractions (for one day): http://www.fortsumtertours.com/combos/fort-sumter-tour-uss-yorktown-combo/.
Just make sure you keep your ticket and you are allowed to come and go as much as you please for the day of your ticket. Our hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
