Description
A bronze, compass rose medal featuring a diving eagle with lightning bolts in its talons. The medal has a fleur-de-lis at the top and no markings on the reverse. The medal hangs from a blue ribbon with two vertical orange stripes near each edge of the ribbon.

Context
James H. Flatley was an accomplished aviator and Navy ace who served during the Second World War. Having served aboard three different carriers, including the USS Yorktown (CV-10), Flatley was an early innovator in carrier aviation. Flatley continued to be an advocate for the importance of carrier aviation throughout his career. Flatley retired in 1958 with the rank of Vice Admiral.
In August of 1943, Flatley was awarded the Air Medal for actions against enemy forces on Marcus Island.
