Context
In 1968 the USS Yorktown served as the recovery vessel for NASA's Apollo 8 Mission. The Apollo 8 crew would be the first to leave low earth orbit and the first crew to orbit the moon.
Dan Bernath was a Photographer's Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class aboard the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) for the 1968 Westpac cruise, Apollo 8 recovery, and 1969 South American and North Atlantic cruises.
