Context
Designed by McDonnell Douglas, the F/A-18 Hornet was created out of need for a multirole aircraft that could replace the functions of the F-4 Phantom II, the A-7 Corsair II, and the A-4 Skyhawk. The Hornet was introduced to the Marine Corps in 1983, but quickly became popular with the US Navy as well, including their Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels.
Bureau Number 162435 was involved in an accident in Naval Air Station Miramar. Upon landing, the aircraft flipped inverted on the runway after hydroplaning on landing and then rolled killing Captain Henry "Hank" Kleeman, USN.
The Hornet arrived at Patriots Point in 2007 and is on loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.
