Context
The F9F Cougar was the first swept wing carrier capable jet ordered by the United States Navy and Marine Corps. While the Navy had been considering the benefits of swept wing designs since before the Korean War, concerns with low-speed handling characteristics of swept wing designs slowed its adoption. The Cougar was an improved version of the Grumman F9F Panther that still used a straight wing design. The F9F Cougar would see service from 1952 to 1974.
