Description
A Japanese phrase booklet produced by the US War Department on February 28, 1944. The 184-page booklet has an orange cover with yellow lettering and is divided into twelve sections addressing different needs and situations. Each section is organized with columns listing an English phrase, a phonetic pronunciation in Japanese, the Hepburn spelling of the Japanese words and the phrase written in Japanese characters.

From the Collection of Frank Manson. Lt. Frank Manson was a Communications Officer aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) from 1944-1945, as well as the press liaison for Commander Becton during the ship's Shipyard Worker Retention Tour.
Included is a note written by Frank Manson on the back of an envelope stating that he used this phrase book to interview a Japanese carrier pilot (chief petty officer) who was rescued east of the Philippines on November 11, 1944.
