Description
An April 30, 1945, letter written by John "Jack" Liller to his sister Barbara, nicknamed Bobby. Liller tells her that he is writing the letter on his own after the successful surgery for his wounds. He comments on the care of the doctors and nurses and expresses his surprise at getting a Purple Heart.

Context
John Francis "Jack" Liller Jr., Yeoman 3/c of Bronx, New York, was a member of the original crew of the USS Laffey (DD-724). Liller received the Purple Heart for wounds he received during the kamikaze attacks on the ship at Okinawa on April 16, 1945.
