A purple and gold heart-shaped medal with the likeness of George Washington on the front. The back of the Purple Heart reads "For Military Merit Sgt. Joseph Marlow, USMCR," and the medal hangs from a purple and white ribbon.

Context
Sgt. Marlow served aboard the USS Franklin (CV-13), but perished during the March 19th, 1945, attack against the aircraft carrier. The Purple Heart was awarded posthumously for his bravery and sacrifice.
