Context
Built by Sikorsky Aircraft, the SH-3 Sea King is an anti-submarine warfare helicopter with a twin-engine design and turboshaft engines. The Sea King was originally ordered by the US Navy to combat Soviet-era submarines during the Cold War but also performed transport, search and rescue and medevac operations. The Sea King served in the US Navy from 1961 to 2006.
Dan Bernath was a Photographer's Mate Petty Officer 3rd Class aboard the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) for the 1968 Westpac cruise, Apollo 8 recovery, and 1969 South American and North Atlantic cruises.
