**TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED THE DAY OF THE EVENT**

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum and ABC News 4 (WCIV-TV) have joined together to host “Eclipse on a Warship” on August 21, 2017.  The USS Yorktown will be one of the final locations in the United States to view the total solar eclipse and guests can watch as the historic aircraft carrier, known to many as the “Fighting Lady,” is transformed to the “Shaded Lady” when the moon completely covers the sun at 2:46 p.m.

The museum will offer many events throughout the day, including presentations by Dr. Christian Iliadis, Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Dr. Douglas Terrier, NASA Chief Technologist at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.; and other NASA scientists. Space inspired children’s activities will be offered throughout the day.

All offerings will be included in the museum’s normal price of admission.  Tickets may only be purchased the day of the event, beginning at 9 a.m., at the ticket window. Due to fire code restraints, a limited number of tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Previous online museum tickets purchased prior to July 14, 2017 will be honored for the event.

Upon entry, the first 3,000 visitors will receive a free pair of specialized glasses designed to protect their eyes while viewing the eclipse. An indirect viewing method will also be offered on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown for those who want to avoid looking directly at the sun.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Patriots Point is located within the “path of totality.” The path, stretching from Oregon to Charleston Harbor, is where the moon will completely cover the sun. The USS Yorktown is expected to be in the dark at 2:46 p.m.

Additional details will be announced closer to the event.  Check out our list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) at this link if you have questions about Eclipse on a Warship.
