USS Yorktown Foundation Symposium: Women's History Month

6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The USS Yorktown Foundation, the designated support organization for Patriots Point Naval and Maritime, will host an informative and lively discussion about women in aviation aboard the historic aircraft carrier USS Yorktown on Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. Attendees will hear the inspirational stories of Alina Scott and Margrit Waltz, two women who have made significant strides in the aviation community. Tickets to the symposium are $10 online or $15 if purchased at the event.

At just 14 years old, Alina Scott flew her Aerolite103 ultralight over 1,000 miles in just six days to attend EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Winning “Aviator of the Year” by the Experimental Aircraft Association, Alina wants to continue making strides in her aviation career, with goals to soon earn her pilot certificate and, eventually, join the United States Air Force.

Margrit Waltz is considered one of the world's most experienced ferry pilots. In 2021, she completed her 900th ferry flight to deliver a Daher TBM 940 from France to Muncie, Indiana. Born in Germany in the late 1950’s, she obtained her pilot’s license when she was 18 years old and quickly became an instructor. Waltz was one of the first pilots to ferry a TBM turboprop single across the Atlantic Ocean, and since 1991, delivered more than 200 TBMs to the North American market.

By organizing events like this symposium, the USS Yorktown Foundation continues its mission of fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of aviation history while supporting educational programs for the community. The foundation plays a crucial role in enhancing existing exhibits and creating new ones, working hand in hand with Patriots Point to ensure the preservation of its rich military history. All proceeds raised through the symposium will support these efforts.
