Fifth graders visit USS Yorktown for history and science program.

The Yorktown comes alive during each cold or warmer morning from 22 January to 05 March as  Patriots Point and the USS Yorktown (CV-10) host over 1400 fifth graders and their teachers from thirty-one Charleston County School District elementary schools. These students will serve as the crew and their mission is "Learning" as they visit for a World War II history and marine science program. The students will hear from World War II veterans each morning, tour the ship, receive a briefing on the Douglas Daultless from a pilot in World War II flight gear, and conduct hands on investigations into the local marine environment of Charleston Harbor. The excitement level is high and the learning environment steep as the students become immersed in a perfect classroom, a historic ship with young blood coursing through its passageways once again.
