Last Thursday on the date of the Navy's 236th birthday, the USS Yorktown (CV-10) joined the nation's recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) by rigging up lights on the flightdeck to give the bridge and aircraft on Yorktown the hue of pink! This could be a another first for the Yorktown and aircraft carriers...and particularly appropriate for this historic ship. Sponsor for all Navy ship christenings are women, ships are known as "she" and the Yorktown's christening sponsor was none less than the First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt (seen below). USS Yorktown's nickname is the "Fighting Lady" and many women worked as welders, electricians, etc., at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia, building this ship in a record 13 months! (01 December 1941 - 21 January 1943).
