The Town of Mount Pleasant Recreation Department and Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum’s Institute of History and Science are partnering to host an exciting new day camp for local children during the holiday season.

Oscar’s Oceanography Holiday Institute is designed for students ages 6-12.  As part of the program, campers will follow Oscar, a molecule of oxygen, through the natural estuary that surrounds the USS Yorktown. Oscar is everywhere – from the oysters growing along the hull to the marsh grasses growing in the harbor. Campers will also participate in various marine science activities learning about Charleston Harbor’s estuary mysteries including crabs and other squishy stuff. Other fun topics include a session on astronomy taught by an astrophysics major from the College of Charleston, an introduction to aviation, historical scavenger hunts on the USS Yorktown and several history guest speakers with one topic being on pirate history.

Patriots Point Department of Education Services Director Keith Grybowski highlighted the benefits of this partnership, which brings together the Town of Mount Pleasant’s outstanding Recreation Department and Patriots Point’s unique marine science and history instructors.  “This synergy has created a program that will be an exciting and educational journey for our children across the community,” Grybowski said. “It is a one of a kind entertaining and educational experience. We have a unique platform for this type of camp and the Town of Mount Pleasant Recreation Department has an impeccable reputation for providing cutting edge camps and services. If this makes out as well as we think, I can see this partnership continuing into the summer vacation period.”

Oscar’s Oceanography Holiday Institute will take place December 19-22; from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and costs $110 for Mount Pleasant residents and $124 for non-residents.  Don’t miss out on this exciting educational opportunity for your children! Register today at www.tompsc.com.
