Major Robert Anderson Surrenders Fort Sumter!

Date

Today marks the 150th anniversary of the surrender of Fort Sumter by Major Robert Anderson to Confederate forces at Charleston, SC.  After a day and a half of bombardment, not one soldier died in combat. The surrender ceremony took place in the afternoon and Confederate Brigadier General Beauregard did not attend the ceremony to receive his favorite professor at West Point's surrender and humiliation. During a planned 100 gun salute, an accident led to the immediate death of one soldier and Anderson stopped the flag salute at 50 shots. Watch the videos below to learn more about events at Sumter and current reenactment events in and around Charleston Harbor.
