In recognition of National Medal of Honor Day, Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum joins the people of South Carolina and Americans across the country in celebrating the achievements of our nation’s finest heroes.

Now in its 150th year, the Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest distinction that can be presented by the President, in the name of Congress, to members of the Armed Forces who have distinguished themselves on the battlefield and demonstrated courage above and beyond the call of duty. To date, the Medal of Honor has been awarded to 3,454 recipients. Today, there are 85 living recipients of the Medal, the most recent of which is Staff Sergeant Salvatore A. Giunta, United States Army, who was presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor on November 16, 2010.

Patriots Point encourages the Lowcountry community to show their appreciation for the heroes who have served our nation with distinction by visiting the Medal of Honor museum at Patriots Point. Residents are also encouraged to:

  • Fly the American Flag with pride and patriotism on this day.
  • Take a few moments to mail a "Thank You" card to a living Medal of Honor recipient.  You can find a list of the living, as well as contact information on the Medal of Honor Society’s website www.cmohs.org.
