An all-new guided-tour takes visitors on an hour journey throughout the aircraft carrier Yorktown. The Steel Canvas Tour features artwork created by sailors aboard the ship more than 50 years ago and highlights about life at sea. The tour costs $15 in addition to the cost of admission and is available to purchase in person at the museum ticketing window or by clicking here.
During the “Steel Canvas” tour, groups of ten to 12 people meet at their specified tour time at the Apollo 8 Space Capsule exhibit. From there they are led by a Patriots Point tour guide to 11 different locations aboard the historic USS Yorktown (CV-10). Stops include the warship’s catapult and engine rooms, the bomb assembly compartment, machine shop, and flight deck. Visitors hear about living conditions aboard the ship and see paintings left by sailors on hatches, bulkheads, planes, and machinery.
“This tour is unlike anything we’ve ever offered before,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Larry Murray. “It is one of the most unique ways to learn about life aboard the ship and see how those feelings are brought to life in paintings, drawings and other artwork.”
“Steel Canvas” requires visitors to ascend and descend ladders throughout six decks of the Yorktown. Activity trackers Fitbit and Apple report that tour-goers will log 1,200 steps and burn 300 calories during the tour that includes ascending and descending six levels on the Yorktown.
