Overnight camping aboard the USS Yorktown continues to be a major draw for scouts and youth groups across the country.

“Since the inception of the overnight camping program in 1980, the USS Yorktown has welcomed nearly 500,000 campers representing all 50 states,” said Overnight Camping Director Alice Seabrook. “We are proud to be ranked consistently among the top scouting destinations in the country.”

During their overnight camping experience at Patriots Point, Scouts have an exciting opportunity to earn merit badges. Each program is designed to capitalize on the unique aspects of the naval and maritime museum as well the surrounding estuary where the Yorktown is berthed.  All programs offer their participants unique hands-on experience, increasing the ability to learn new concepts and skills. Current merit badges include: aviation, oceanography, journalism and astronomy.

Efforts are underway to continue building upon the overnight camping program through additional marketing, outreach to new target audiences and the implementation of exciting new programs including robotics and the National Flight Academy.
