Back by popular demand, the Patriots Point Institute of History, Science and Technology is offering Homeschool Days aboard the USS Yorktown from 10 a.m. – noon on the second Tuesday of each month starting Tuesday, February 12. The cost of the program is $10 per student and registration is available here.  Due to high demand for this innovative program, registration is limited to 200 participants per session.

Each Homeschool Day features a 90-minute program that includes standards-based history and science instruction by certified staff. The program features standards-based instruction that combines the rich history of Charleston, the wonders of the Charleston Harbor’s estuarine environment, and included a visit to the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier and USS Laffey destroyer.

Following the program, students and chaperones will have the opportunity to tour the remainder of the museum, including the Medal of Honor Museum, Vietnam Support Base Camp and USS Clamagore submarine.  For an additional $1 per student, participants had the option to add a scavenger hunt to their visit to see even more of the ship’s sites while learning interesting facts and details about the Yorktown’s service.

The Patriots Point Institute of History, Science and Technology hosted four Homeschool Days last year with approximately 400 students participating.  By offering the program on a monthly basis, the Institute hopes to expand the program to an even wider audience this year.

“The Institute of History, Science and Technology has captured the imaginations of more than 100,000 students and educators and we’re excited to continue building upon our programs,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette. “In the past, our education program was offered only to classroom-sized groups, thereby making it difficult for homeschool educators – with considerably smaller class sizes – to participate. Our Homeschool Day solves this challenge and provides a great opportunity to share our outstanding educational programming with a new audience.”
