Patriots Point's Volunteer Memorial & Volunteer recognitions - Volunteer of the year Robert Newman[/caption]

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is filled with more than 1,000,000 square feet of ships, exhibits, and spaces to explore. But it is clear that the heart of the organization is the volunteers. Patriots Point currently has 121 active volunteers who donated a combined 10,810 hours of their time to the museum so far this year (January-October 2021). Their contributions include driving the shuttle, answering questions at the Info Desk, and providing knowledgeable insight about Patriots Point exhibits. In November, Patriots Point held a luncheon to show appreciation for all volunteers. We also announced the 2021 Distinguished Volunteer of the Year: Robert Newman.

Newman has been a Patriots Point volunteer since 2016. He is a Navy veteran, serving as an Engineering Duty Officer aboard the USS Albany (CG-10). You may have spotted Newman working at the Info Desk on Saturday afternoons. One of his favorite volunteer activities is giving personal tours to visitors from the Navy, earning him the nickname "Boiler Room Bob". He also has contributed to the Vietnam Experience Exhibit Rehabilitation Team and strived to revive the Navy Power School program following pandemic closures. Newman is known for taking initiative and being a diligent volunteer. This recognition is well deserved and we are lucky to have him as a part of the crew!
