Patriots Point To Host Largest Gathering For Girl Sscout Centennial In SC
On Saturday, March 10, Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum will join with the Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina in celebrating the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting. This special event – “Bridging to the Next Century of Girl Scouts” – is the largest gathering of its kind in the state; and will bring together more than 1,400 Girl Scouts and their families for a day of educational programs, games and interactive activities at Patriots Point. The morning will kick off with girls walking across the Ravenel Bridge (in groups of 20) to symbolize walking into the next century of Girl Scouting. Activities continue with educational programs aboard the USS Yorktown highlighting the history of Girl Scouting, as well as notable Girl Scouts, through interactive “clicker technology.” In addition, the day will feature special appearances by Erika Powell, Miss South Carolina USA 2012 and Kim Jackson, a former Girl Scout and Naval Aviator; as well as a special flag ceremony with girls wearing replicas of the first Girl Scout uniform from 1912. The day will conclude with a ‘bang’ – with an impressive fireworks display adjacent to the USS Yorktown. “We are excited to partner with the Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina to celebrate this momentous anniversary,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette. “For more than 30 years, Patriots Point’s Youth Overnight Camping Program has been one of the nation’s top destinations for scouts who wish to take part in an educational adventure aboard one of the nation’s most historic naval vessels. Since 1980, the USS Yorktown – also known as “The Fighting Lady” – has welcomed nearly 500,000 scouts representing all 50 states. We’re honored to be a part of this rich history and look forward to being a part of the next 100 years of Girl Scouting.”
“Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina is investing in the next century of leaders,” said Loretta Graham, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina. “In 1912, Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low gathered 18 girls together in Savannah, Ga., to begin this tradition, and we are proud of the impact we have, but the astounding potential present in our girls inspires us to aim even higher. We have declared 2012 to be the “Year of the Girl,” and our efforts are designed to create a world where girls and women are represented equally as leaders of our communities, our businesses and our nation for the next 100 years. We are thankful for this partnership with Patriots Point, because these relationships help our vision become a reality. In the next 100 years we are committed TO GET HER THERE by expanding leadership opportunities, reaching more girls -- especially in underserved communities -- and developing more volunteers to ensure high-quality program delivery. Please join us on this adventure as we change the face of leadership for the next century in 2012 during the “Year Of The Girl.”
