Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, following the direction of the Charleston County Government, will close to visitors starting Wednesday, October 5 and remain closed until further notice. The museum will spend the next few days preparing its warships and aircraft for the effects of Hurricane Matthew.

“Our first commitment is to the safety of our staff and their families,” said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette. “Before the storm arrives, we will focus on securing all aircraft and ships to the best of our ability.  We have a very comprehensive heavy weather plan that we will follow, and if necessary, we will keep an emergency crew onboard the USS Yorktown. “

Patriots Point plans to reopen to visitors as soon as possible once the storm has passed. The state agency follows the weather decisions made by Charleston County government officials.

“We will be ready to reopen as soon as we get the ‘all clear,’” said Burdette.
