The Wonders of the Waters at Patriots Point

Date

Spring at Patriots Point is a pretty magical place. Constant sun, summer-like temperatures, and a perfect breeze are the makings of a beautiful spring visit! The first day of the season is just days away.

One thing you may not know is included in your admission ticket is all the ocean wildlife you have an opportunity to see while you’re here! Dolphins, manatees, and turtles are some of our frequent pier guests along with crabs, various fish types, and more. These beautiful spring days are the best for gazing off the pier in search of ocean life.

Don’t believe us? Well, come see them with your own eyes.  Here's a preview of what you'll find!

The first is a staff favorite, the manatee! These big guys don’t stick around all year, so this is a true spring treat. This video was taken in 2019 when we had several manatees come to hang out with us for a few days.

Next up, are dolphins - our most frequent visitors.  You can see them playing off the sides of our ships almost daily in the Charleston Harbor. If you’re really lucky, you might even get a glimpse of a calf (baby dolphin) jumping in and out of the waves!

*Insider dolphin tip: Purchase a pick-me-up at the snack bar and take a break on the fantail of the Yorktown during the summer, you’re sure to spot dolphins in the Harbor while you enjoy a little tour break!

If you look really close, stingrays and jellyfish can also be found floating in our shallower waters. They may seem scary, but since you are on the pier and not in the water, feel free to marvel at them from above.

Crabs, fish, turtles, birds, alligators, and maybe even a small shark or two can also be found roaming our side of the Charleston Harbor. If you look close enough, you’re sure to see several of the various ocean wildlife.
