WWII Vets Invited to Attend Spirit of ’45 Day Express Stopover

Date

The Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is inviting all World War II veterans and their families aboard the USS YORKTOWN on Tuesday, July 29, to take part in a special Spirit of ’45 Day Express Tour stopover.

The Spirit of ’45 Express is part of a national campaign, supported by the Navy League, designed to raise public awareness for the 2015 commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII.

In 2010, Congress unanimously agreed to create an annual Spirit of ’45 Day to honor the achievements of America’s ‘greatest generation’ so that their example of courage, self-sacrifice, service and national unity will forever inspire future generations of Americans.  Later, in 2013, Governor Nikki Haley proclaimed Aug. 11 Spirit of ’45 Day for the State of South Carolina.

Since February, the Spirit of ’45 Express bus has traveled more than 25,000 miles stopping at World War II memorials and museums in 37 states.  It is expected to arrive at Patriots Point around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

WWII veterans and their families wishing to attend the Patriots Point stopover on July 29 will be offered free admission.  Updates for this event will be posted to the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum website and social media pages.
