Title
Apollo 8 Command Module Replica
Description
A white, conical capsule made to be a part of the larger service module, which in turn was attached to the Saturn V rocket. This replica module is intentionally designed to show the wear and tear of reentry on the module as would have been seen upon the recovery of the vehicle.
Context
In 1968 the USS Yorktown served as the recovery vessel for NASA's Apollo 8 Mission. The Apollo 8 crew would be the first to leave low earth orbit and the first crew to orbit the moon.
A team of frogmen from the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) would assist in pulling the original module from the waters of the Pacific on December 27, 1968. The crew of the module were received on board the ship for ceremony, celebration, and recovery.
The replica came to Patriots Point in 2001 and was constructed but the Robert Bosch Corporation.
