Context
The Navy has several ceremonies for various instances of "crossing of the line". These ceremonies are often akin to a hazing or a rite of passage where uninitiated sailors undergo the tradition to join the ranks of the veteran sailors.
The items in this collection were donated by Samuel Wingrove, a plank owner and Water Tender aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during World War II. Wingrove was present for both D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa.
Wingrove would be promoted a Boiler Technician, go on to serve on a variety of Navy ships in the Korean War and retire as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer.
