USS Laffey and Beyond: The Naval Career of Samuel Wingrove
Samuel Wingrove was a plank owner and Water Tender aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during World War II. Wingrove survived both attacks on the ship during D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa. He would later be promoted to a Boiler Technician and continued to serve on a variety of Navy ships during the Korean War. Samuel Wingrove honorably served on active duty as a part of the United States Navy from 1946-1952. He retired as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer.
After Wingrove’s memorable service on the USS Laffey that spanned both theaters of World War II, he remained a devoted Association member for the rest of his life. He returned to Patriots Point to see the ship become a part of the museum’s historic fleet and would later donate his collection to the museum.
