Context
Travel guides were often provided by the United States Navy as a way to help their sailors enjoy their liberty while in a foreign port. The ship's print office usually had a great deal of freedom in how that information was passed out to the crew.
The items in this collection were donated by Samuel Wingrove, a plank owner and Water Tender aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during World War II. Wingrove was present for both D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa.
Wingrove would be promoted a Boiler Technician, go on to serve on a variety of Navy ships in the Korean War and retire as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer.
