Context
After enduring waves of kamikaze attacks off Okinawa on April 16, 1945, the USS Laffey underwent extensive repairs. Once repaired the Laffey underwent a shakedown cruise in preparation for redeployment. The Laffey would return to Hawaii just in time for Navy Day in 1945.
The items in this collection were donated by Samuel Wingrove, a plank owner and Water Tender aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during World War II. Wingrove was present for both D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa.
Wingrove would be promoted a Boiler Technician, go on to serve on a variety of Navy ships in the Korean War and retire as a US Navy Chief Petty Officer.
