Description

Context
Manufactured by Douglas, the SBD Dauntless entered service in 1940 as the Navy's main dive bomber and also provided support as a scout plane. The Dauntless would be a staple of the Navy's carrier firepower for the first half of the war in the Pacific theater. By 1944 the Dauntless had begun to be replaced by the S2C Helldiver as the Navy's primary dive bomber.
