Context
As the Korean War began, the US Navy soon discovered that their straight wing fighters were underperforming against fighter planes with swept wing designs. The Navy was working on their own swept wing designs, but they were not ready for deployment yet. As a stopgap measure the Navy took the Air Force's F-86 Sabre and made alterations to the design so that it could accommodate carrier operations. The FJ Fury was the result of these efforts.
By the late 1960's the Fury was removed from active service and relegated to serve as target planes or spare parts.
