Description
A round, bronze medal with a wave pattern border around the outside. The central design is of an eagle holding arrows and laurels surrounded by the words "United States of America - Navy" on blue enamel. The reverse has a trident and laurels as the central design with "For Distinguished Service" on blue enamel. The medal is suspended from an enameled white, five-pointed star with an anchor in the center. The attached ribbon is navy blue with a single, vertical yellow stripe running down the middle.

Context
James H. Flatley was an accomplished aviator and Navy ace who served during the Second World War. Having served aboard three different carriers, including the USS Yorktown (CV-10), Flatley was an early innovator in carrier aviation. Flatley continued to be an advocate for the importance of carrier aviation throughout his career. Flatley retired in 1958 with the rank of Vice Admiral.
Flatley was posthumously awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for his diverse duties and positions of great responsibility from July 1953 to June of 1958.
