Context
Lieutenant Arthur Doty, Jr. was the Chief Machinist serving aboard the USS Laffey (DD-724) during the 1951 blockade of Wonsan Harbor. The destroyer was being shelled by shore batteries in Wonsan, South Korea when a piece of the shell struck Doty as a glancing blow to the arm. The injury earned Doty a Purple Heat. A shipmate of Doty's picked up the shrapnel fragment and gave it back to him. Doty brought it home to Summerville, South Carolina as a souvenir.
