Happy Veterans Day to all veterans! As a special treat to vets, today in San Diego the University of North Carolina Tar Heels face the Michigan State Spartans in a basketball game to be held on the flight deck of the USS Vinson (CVN-70).  Several vets have asked me what happens if the basketball goes over the side? In my first squadron tour with the VAW-126 Seahawks I actually observed several lost balls that went out the hangar bay door of the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), needless to say...the ship did not stop or turn around to recover the lost basketballs.  It seems to me that our hangar bay basketball games came to an end halfway through a six month deployment, not sure how many balls we lost at sea!

Hear what this young sailor on the Vinson has to say about the game here...
